Sparks
Definitely a restaurant for the alpha male...went to eat with my mom and Swimster, and felt like we were the only females in the joint. And the only ones who didn't show up in a black towncar. The decor reminds me of an old western saloon...thick plush red carpets, lots of mirrors and ornate glass dividers...very Disneyworld-esque.
Everything you order at Sparks is a la carte. You order steak that's all you get- a cut of steak. You order broccoli, that's what you get ...plain and simple. If you're in the mood for steak or you're feeling a bit of an iron deficiency, go to Sparks and you'll be healthy and meat-filled for a month.
The waiters come out and serve everything off a wheeled tray, I think because there's no way they're strong enough to carry the plates out.
Menu memorables: The Steak medallions were perfect, as were the steak scallopini and the prime sirloin. With 3 different temperatures, they aced them all : rare, medium rare, and well done. We decided to try the mashed potatoes and the broccoli and the spinach...all great sides.
The service was excellent, though the welcome was a bit odd. I think they were shocked we showed up without a reservation and didn't seem to take my blonde and blue-eyed mom seriously at first, which was a turnoff. The host was a bit cold and stand-offish...would have been treated otherwise had we not looked like we were tourists...and had our post-work suits on....

Nicely written. I suppose the atmosphere is that of most steak houses in NY. My recent visit to Peter Luger in Brooklyn went along the same lines as you described. However, I did arrive to that place in a black town car. Lot's of meat placed on a plate.
In fact, I also had dinner this past year at the Palm and had the same reaction. Lots of meat, so what?
I enjoy your blog and your writing style.
Hey, thanks a lot for your response, it's much appreciated.
My friend went to Luger's for her husband's birthday, is it worth the trip? Maybe for a special occasion?
If you're a Hamptonite, try Old Stove Pub, steak house that's meaty in its plates and prices but NOT meaty in pretentiousness.
